Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS)

Hands-on training for image-guided interventional treatment of acute ischemic stroke

learn more
This learning module is designed for:
Interventional Neuroradiologists - residents, fellows and procoring interventionalists

NV Connect training cases are designed to learn skills essential to cerebral interventional procedures. The module facilitates technical, procedural, and cognitive training and discussions in a risk-free environment for these delicate procedures.

The training cases offer the opportunity to train on a range of neuro-interventional procedures, from the carotid artery and intracranial stenting to thrombectomy and aneurysm treatments (using flow diversion and coiling).

All cases provide all trainees—from beginners to advanced operators—with a risk-free opportunity to perfect both basic navigation skills and procedure-related specific skills and prepare well for the real intervention. NV Connect also allows trainers to set specific training targets, depending on the audience, by setting up benchmarks for each case or using the predefined benchmarks that come with the cases.

The AIS cases teach specific skills for treating neurovascular thrombectomy, focusing on the basic steps of aortic and supra-aortic access, direct aspiration, and mechanical thrombectomy using retrievers and a combined technique.

Features & Benefits

Key Benefits

Procedural planning based on patient scenarios

Learn the procedural steps for supra-aortic access and cerebral angiography, including 3DRA

Acquire pertinent technical and manipulation skills

Safely access and navigate the cerebral vasculature

Assess the location of the occlusion, as well as the tortuosities of the access path, using angiograms

Treat the occlusion using direct aspiration, stentriever and combined technique

Features & Benefits
  • Ability to use real clinical devices
  • Stent retrievers and aspiration catheters included
  • Type 1, 2, 3 arch and bicarotid aortic takeoff variations
  • Advanced imaging with biplane C-arm, DSA, shutters,
  • 3D overlay and 3DRA
  • Various intra- and extracranial anatomy variation with different difficulty
  • Didactic aspiration visualization
  • Record and export cine loops for review and debriefing
Training Objectives
  • Perform a safe carotid access in difficult aortic arch variations
  • Perform aspiration through collection of thrombus at tip of catheter and understanding the flow feedback through catheter (ADAPT)
  • Learn a safe technique (under aspiration, single motion) to withdraw a stentriever
  • Manage carotid artery stenosis considering distal thrombus
  • Navigate a tortuous carotid artery and understand haptic feedback on aspiration catheter
  • Manage complications such as dissections, spasms and distal migration
